“Battle of Dražgoše”, Monument Cankar Battalion in Dražgoše

Location: Dražgoše, Slovenia

Completed: 1976

Mosaic artist: Ive Šubic

Genre: Mosaic, Socialist architecture, former Yugoslavia

The lefthand section of the detailed and graphic mosaic depicting the 1942 WWII Battle of Dražgoše. The mosaic, which extends 7-metres in length, is part of the Monument Cankar Battalion in Dražgoše. It was completed in 1976 by Slovenian artist Ive Šubic, who was a partisan during the war and took part in the battle. It is a touching piece of work, made all the more poignant by the fact that the artist was actually there.
