Tkvarcheli Railway Station

Tkvarcheli developed as a coal mining region in the mid-1930s and grew in importance during the Great Patriotic War (World War II), helping to supply the industrial needs of the Soviet military’s fight against the Germans. The collapse of the USSR followed by the Abkhazia-Georgia conflict of 1992-93 had a disastrous effect on the town and its inhabitants. Nowadays, the settlement is a shadow of its former self and many of its buildings are in a state of abandonment. More information about Tkvarcheli.
