Former Military Housing

Location: Irbene, Latvia

Completed: Early 1970s

Architect: Not known

Genre: Modernist, Soviet architecture, abandoned, former USSR

Located off the main road that links Ventspils with Cape Kolka, Irbene was a purpose-built Soviet town constructed to house the military personnel, scientists and sundry workforce who worked at the nearby Soviet radio astronomy centre known as Zvaigznīte, now called Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Centre. Comprising of apartment blocks, a kindergarten, a sports centre and a shop, the settlement fell into a state of abandonment not long after the Soviet military left the area in 1993.
