Monument to Hanged Patriots

Location: Vranjske Njive, Montenegro

Completed: 1961

Architect: Milorad Mišo Vukotić

Alternative names: Monument to the Fallen Victims of the National Liberation War and ‘The Fork’

Genre: Spomenik, Socialist monument, former Yugoslavia

The monument commemorates 9 Partisan prisoners who were publicly executed at this spot in December 1943 by German forces during the National Liberation War (World War II). The village of Vranjske Njive sits on one of the main routes into Podgorica and the occupying Germans deliberately picked such a prominent roadside location to carry out the executions as a scare tactic and deterrent to others.
