The original train station in Chernihiv was destroyed by German bombs in 1941 and the new building was constructed using the labour of German prisoners of war. The architect, Ukrainian-born Gennady Granatkin, was responsible for designing a number of railway terminuses across the Soviet Union. He was also involved in the initial blueprint for some of Kyiv’s metro stations.
