Former Cable Car Station ‘Chavchavadze’

Location: Chiatura, Georgia

Completed: 1963

Designer: Giorgi Pantsulaya

Genre: Modernist, Soviet architecture, former USSR

Chiatura has been a mining town since the late 1800s when the largest reserve of manganese in Georgia (and one of the greatest in the world) was discovered in the area. The cable car system was constructed to provide an easy form of transport for the town’s miners. The original cable car network no longer operates and has been replaced with a new one but many of the stations from the earlier era are still dotted in and around Chiatura. More information about Chiatura’s cable car network.
