Visaginas is an atomograd (planned satellite city), built initially to house those who worked on the construction of the nearby Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant and then as a place to live for the plant’s employees. Until 1992, the city was called Sniečkus, after Antanas Sniečkus, who served as the First Secretary of the Lithuanian Communist Party from 1940 to 1974. From its initial concept, Visaginas was planned as a modern city and Yuri Vuyma, the architect behind the project, was nominated for the State Prize of the USSR but due to the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, he never received it.
