The monument is dedicated to the Soviet test pilot, Valery Chkalov (1904-1938), whose achievements include a pioneering 63-hour non-stop flight from Moscow to Vancouver via the North Pole in June 1937. Chkalov was killed in December 1938 while test piloting a prototype of the Soviet-designed Polikarpov I-180 fighter, which crashed on its maiden flight. He was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union in 1936.
