Edvard Kardelj (1910-1979) was a politician and an economist who was an important member of the Communist Party of Slovenia before World War II and one of the leaders of the Liberation Front of the Slovenian People during the conflict. After the war, he went on to become a prominent figure in Yugoslavian politics. The monument, which shows Kardelj striding forward from an assembly of featureless figures, was erected on Revolution Square (now Republic Square) two years after his death in 1979.
