Karen Demirchyan was a Soviet and Armenian politician. He served as the First Secretary of the Armenian SSR from 1974 until 1988 and later in his career, as the President of the National Assembly of Armenia. He was assassinated in the Armenian parliament shooting more commonly known as October 27 because of the date on which it took place: October 27, 1999. He was posthumously awarded the title, National Hero of Armenia.
