Bubanj Memorial Park

Location: Niš, Serbia

Completed: 1963

Architects: Mihajlo Mitrović and Ivan Sabolić

Genre: Spomenik, Socialist memorial, former Yugoslavia

Bubanj Memorial Park commemorates the thousands of civilians who were brought to this location from the nearby Crveni Krst (Red Cross) Concentration Camp and murdered by German execution squads during the National Liberation War (World War II). The “Three Fists”, which are the most dominating part of the complex, depict defiance and courage against aggression. Additionally, each one is a different size, representing the hand of a man, woman and child.
