Sokhumi Railway Station

Location: Sukhumi, Abkhazia

Completed: 1951

Architects: Levan and Lola Mushkudiani

Genre: Stalinist Empire style, Soviet architecture, former USSR

Prior to the ethnic-related conflict with Georgia (August 1992-September 1993), Abkhazia was the darling of the ‘Soviet Riviera’ and a popular spot for holidaymakers from all over the USSR. To accommodate the influx of tourists quite a few railway stations, like this one in Sukhumi, were constructed along the Black Sea coast. The stations were designed in the style of Stalinist architecture and are now mostly in a poor state of repair as a consequence of the war.
