Sydir Kovpak (1887-1967) was one of the leaders of the Soviet partisans in Ukraine during the Great Patriotic War (World War II). Under his leadership, guerrilla detachments waged attacks on Axis occupied strongholds including near Yaremche in the Carpathian region. Kovpak was twice awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union and went on to hold prominent positions in leadership positions in Soviet Ukraine after the war ended. The 5-metre tall sculpture portrays a fearless partisan holding an automatic rifle above his head.
