Uyghurs (the indigenous population from China’s Xinjiang province), particularly the men, are very photogenic. Every one of them looks like he has a lifetime of stories to tell and a great place to see Uyghur men en masse is at the Id Kah Mosque in Old Kashgar just before or after the Friday Call to Prayer. It is advisable to be a bit discreet if you want to take photographs – the Uyghurs are big guys and the old town of Kashgar (what’s left of it) can be a volatile place at times, although western tourists are rarely the target of any friction.  The alternative is to smile and ask nicely. Sometimes you get lucky like we did and you end up with nice photos like these ones.
